Spinach
Spinach can help improve the body’s ability to control blood glucose in diabetic individuals, aid with lowering blood pressure, as well as improving bone health. Not a big fan of spinach? Try it in your protein shakes as a low calorie ingredient—you won’t even taste it.
Shane Anderson, facility manager at FAST North Central Phoenix
Carrots and Hummus
When you get caught with no food and you’re on the verge of getting hangry, opt for carrots and hummus instead of salty sweet treats until you can buy time to make yourself a healthy meal. This duo is great to meal prep ahead and have stocked in your fridge for an easy-grab snack.
Jeff Bloom, FAST director
Mushrooms
Mushrooms have a long list of health benefits including improved blood flow, kidney and respiratory support, and improved skin and hair. Try using mushrooms as a meal substitute. Finely chop them, season them and replace where you’d use ground beef. It’s great in tacos!
Jonathan Castillo, facility manager at Tempe
Greek Yogurt
Try using plain Greek yogurt as a substitute for sour cream. It’s rich in protein and has less fat. This healthy swap makes having tacos much more enjoyable without the added calories.
Nate Souza, facility manager at FAST North Central Phoenix
Hard Boiled Eggs
Hard boiled eggs are a great snack choice for people on the go. They have around 6 grams of protein per egg, making it great post workout or midday snack. Not to mention, these are easy to meal prep and last all week.
